Our title is “Lean Security 101: Lean and Practical Approaches to Security Projects

For years, we've been told the key to security is technology. We purchase and deploy technology to create layers behind layers, making our walls taller and taller to keep the bad guys out. Sadly, it's not working.

What does work is combining lessons learned in other industries to the security world. By examining best practices within Lean Manufacturing, Agile Development and Rugged DevOps, this presentation delivers ways you can be successful in security, not by purchasing technology, but by:

  • Effectively using what you have and what you can get for free
  • Re-allocating security budget from the point of diminishing return
  • Identifying and maximizing learning opportunities
  • Engaging in small, inexpensive test projects
  • Choosing custom and rational metrics to measure what matters
  • Replacing defective systems with ones that grow with you
  • Turning security from a catch-up game into one of strategic and competitive advantage.

Success in security depends on the right mix of people, technology and process. Without all three, you are doomed to failure.

Get Your Wi-Fi Ready for the iPad

Apple has sold over 52 million iPhones and iPads in the first half of 2011. These employee-owned consumer devices are making their way to the workplace creating a new set of security and management challenges for IT departments. Aruba has developed a new solution to help customers scale their "existing" Wi-Fi network (including Cisco Wi-Fi) and IT helpdesk processes to support productivity enhancing bring-your-own-device initiatives. Aruba's clientless solution provides a mechanism to secure, provision and manage employee-owned devices while minimizing IT overhead.

Onboarding Personal Devices to Corporate Networks

Many IT organizations are being asked to allow personal devices onto corporate networks.  Unlike corporate-issued devices that are well-managed and under IT’s control, this new Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) initiative introduces a unique set of security challenges that require a balance of flexibility, visibility, security.

This presentation will explain the concept of a “BYOD Blueprint” and lessons learned from onboarding personal devices to over 800 networks around the world.

iPhones, Droids, and Tablets: Protecting your network from unmanaged smart devices

In today’s BYOD (bring your own device) culture, there are now probably 3 times as many personal smartphone devices in your corporate network airspace than IT assigned corporate devices, all Wi-Fi enabled. Unmanaged Wi-Fi connections of personal smartphone devices can expose your network to security threats, malware, and data leakage. Monitoring personal smartphone usage has been one of the top priorities and challenges for wireless network and security admins today. In this presentation, experts from AirTight Networks, a leader in Wi-Fi security and compliance solutions, will discuss important strategies to protect your network from smartphone threats and demonstrate how AirTight’s accurate, automated detection and prevention can protect your security perimeter. Topics covered are:

  • Threat landscape
  • Limitations of common security practices
How to restrict personal smartphone devices from accessing corporate network assets
  • Wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS)
  • Mobile device management (MDM) systems
  • Cloud based Wi-Fi security
